Tips for Laser Engraving Our Slate Coasters
I love working with slate, especially these slate coasters. In general, they are really easy to work with, and you can quickly get the hang of engraving them with your CO2 or diode laser. Here are a few tips to help you get the best results when engraving slate coasters:
Clean any residue from the coaster. There may be some dust or scuffs that can easily be removed with a dry towel.
The thickness varies from slate coaster to coaster, so it is important to measure with each burn. You can sort the coasters by thickness to reduce the adjustments; however, I still recommend measuring.
Don’t touch the coaster until you have the desired results. Sometimes, the adjustment is slightly off, and you may want to run another pass. This is much easier to do if you have moved anything.
Create sets for your customers that are similar in thickness.
Consider adding a layer of protection with a clear sealant such as Mod Podge. It can help protect the edges from flaking, and the natural slate won’t have visible watermarks from cold sweating glasses.
